Di seguito riporto l’elenco alfabetico dei 100 migliori film usciti nel 2003 secondo Imdb, il più autorevole database ‘americano’ per il cinema (dati aggiornati al 12/02/2004). Viene riportato il voto medio degli utenti (minimo 6.5/10) e tra parentesi il n° di voti raccolti (minimo 300). La data di uscita è quella internazionale (cioè NON quella effettiva nelle sale USA). Tenete presente che il voto ponderato medio di tutto il database è attualmente 6.9/10, livello che quindi deve essere considerato come la ‘sufficienza’. E’ chiaro che rifacendo la ricerca fra qualche mese si potrebbero utilizzare criteri più selettivi (tipo: voto min 7/10 e n° voti min 500), in quanto molti film internazionali usciti nel 2003 nei rispettivi paesi devono ancora uscire nelle sale degli altri paesi (ed anche nei mercati home video). Questo spiega la presenza di molti blockbuster USA usciti in tutto il mondo da più di qualche mese, e l’assenza di pur ottimi film e documentari che non hanno ancora avuto la stessa visibilità (fa comunque piacere vedere gli ottimi voti di Good bye, Lenin!, del canadese Le Invasioni Barbariche, nonché la presenza di alcuni titoli italiani). Di seguito riporto l’elenco alfabetico dei migliori film del 2003 secondo le recensioni dei critici americani (dati RottenTomatoes aggiornati al 12/02/2004). Concorrono a formare la lista, tutti i film e i documentari ‘effettivamente’ usciti nelle sale USA nel corso del 2003 (non conta quindi la data internazionale riportata su Imdb). Vengono considerati, inoltre, solo i film che abbiano ottenuto un minimo di 20 recensioni sulle testate giornalistiche online americane, e viene riportata, accanto al titolo, la percentuale di recensioni positive secondo il metodo di RT: una recensione è giudicata ‘positiva’ (fresh) solo se il voto sintetico espresso dal recensore è uguale o maggiore a 6/10 (e questo anche se il recensore si esprime con le stellette: ad es. 3 stelle su 5 è ‘fresh’ mentre 2 stelle su 4 è ‘rotten’, cioè è una recensione tutto sommato negativa). Il metodo di RT, pur essendo sostanzialmente valido, ha il grande difetto di considerare una marea di recensioni più o meno accondiscendenti verso i blockbuster USA (che infestano tutti i media a livello pubblicitario). D’altra parte, premia con i voti più alti alcune piccole produzioni e documentari che sono, da sempre, la gioia delle ‘firme’ più autorevoli (e anche la mia). Lascio a voi i commenti.

io invece l'ho trovata una ricerca interessante e l'ho analizzata
eliminanto cortometraggi e documentari e qualche film tipo svedese o iraniano che , diciamo così, non rientra nella rosa degli oscar nè degli IOMA le classifiche sono state queste:

escludendo i film di animazione i film migliori sono
1 Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2 American Splendor
3 The Station Agent
4 Lost in Translation
5 Mystic River
rispetto alle nomination agli Oscar American splendor e Station agent prendono il posto di Master e Commander (comunque 12 esimo) e l'orrendo Seabiscuit (segno evidente dell'immeritata nomination)
6 Kill Bill: Vol. 1

8 The School of Rock,

si nota con piacere il successo di film come Kill Bill, Shattered glass, 21 grammi!!!, Barbarian Invasion e Dogville che tra l'altro è penalizzato in classifica perchè non essendo uscito negli USA non è nella classifica dei critici. ( è secondo in quella degli utenti IMDB!!!!!)

e non si può poi negare lo stratosferico successo del Signore degli anelli che, al primo posto nella classifica IMDB si becca anche un incredibile 5o posto della critica americana che lascia Lost in translation al 9o posto e Mystic River addirittura al 26esimo. Non facile per un film fantasy avere i favori unanimi della critica
